My love of singing folk songs and theater music and my joy of sharing a good story accompanied by an acoustic guitar, acoustic bass and/or a piano has never been more evident than on this album.

'believe, breathe and sing', my 13th commercially released album, finds me luxuriating in the fruits of longtime companionships with writers, musicians and magic-making recording engineers. The musical contributions of co-writers Michele Brourman, Ritt Henn, Robert Sprayberry, Claudia Anderson, Matt Vinson and Luke Wygodny are joined by songs made by some of my most admired music creators and wordsmiths: Jahn Sood (FOUR songs from Jahn's folk score for THE DISAPPEARING MAN), Ezra Furman (co-writer of 'Old No. 22 with Jahn), the musical theater songwriting team of Matte O'Brien and Matt Vinson, Alan Schmucker (his 'Sparrow' haunted me from the first time I heard it), Bryce Kulak and poet Chelan Harkin.

Musicians: Rose Snyder (piano), Ritt Henn (bass, ukulele and shaker), Gantt Kushner (guitar), Audrey Q Snyder (cello) and David Robison (piano) are all alumni of multiple albums in my (better said: 'our') catalogue. Alan Schmuckler is the lone songmaking newcomer to my recorded library - I hope he'll allow me to record more of his catalogue soon.

I am grateful to Alan M Richards for the use of his art as the cover of 'believe, breathe and sing'. Seeing Alan's painting, I immediately thought of the couple whose story is told in 'Old No. 22'. Would they recognize each other 30 plus years later were they to find themselves on that same, but many times renovated, train platform?

I am no longer young. I write and sing songs that ask, and attempt to answer, questions that took every one of my years to form. Thank you for your interest in these songs. And thank you to Lee Lessack of LML MUSIC. His musical and practical knowledge, generosity and support for my musical storytelling intentions are NECESSARY to my spirit/soul.

Recently, as a lyricist, I have begun a practice of attempting to get out of the way of whatever voice other than my own that appears on the page when I sit down to write …letting the lyrics represent the voice that brought them to me.
