Actor's Prayer
Lyrics by David Cameron Anderson, Davecamson Music ASCAP

Like most actors I know, while rehearsing a play
I've a dream that I cannot avoid
It's a pretty good bet, that I'll wake in a sweat
My confidence all but destroyed
All of a sudden, it's opening night
I'm on stage and I don't know my lines!
I've come up with a prayer, to whoever's up there
for the next time my dream so inclines

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my mind to keep
For once I close these weary eyes
I'm Sweeney Todd, to my surprise!
I've never seen the set before
Or met the cast or sung the score
The only song I seem to know
Is Bingo was his name - O

Now, at last, the day is done
I thank the Lord for all the fun
Oh, spare me please, the avante-garde
It's bad enough I trash the Bard
I'm Romeo and where's my sword?
He's s'posed to go to his reward
So my attempt to do him in
Is slap his face and kick his shin
A whisper is all that my vocal cord offers
An audience teeming with babies and coughers
At the very least, please I am begging you God
If I dare to look, let there be clothes on my bod!

Now I lay me down to rest
I pray the Lord I'll do my best
But if I act before I wake
I pray the memory to shake
